Do You Know Anyone Who is Irritable or Nervy?

"Stress is so prevalent in our daily life that we have become desensitized to it and the message it is trying to give us, which is to slow down.

Anxiety is a chemical reaction created when the adrenals glands respond to a stressful event, such as low blood sugar by releasing adrenaline. Adrenaline is very useful if you’re trying to escape from a stressful situation, because it stimulates the fight-or-flight response: the heart rate starts pumping faster; digestion slows down; energy stores are released from the liver and made available to the heart, lungs, and muscles; and the muscles of the arms and legs are activated.

Why Is Calcium So Important As To Have Its Own Regulating Gland? And What Of Magnesium?

Calcium is the only mineral to have its own regulating gland, the parathyroid glands (they’re the glands near the thyroid but have nothing to do with the thyroid)! Calcium’s main functions are:

1.    To provide electrical energy for your nervous system. The way it does this is to provide the means for electrical impulses to travel along your nerves. Calcium is what your nervous system uses to conduct “electricity”, which is why the most common deficiency symptoms are nervous system ones such as depression, weakness, tiredness – like a power failure.

2.    To provide the electrical energy needed by your muscles, which really just brings us back to the nervous system as it controls the nerves that conduct the electricity into your muscles.  In order for them to function correctly, they need to contract and relax.

Pretty much like a heartbeat. Your heart is just a big ole muscle. It contracts and relaxes. Calcium is what makes it contract to pump blood through your body. That’s why deficiencies in calcium can cause heart and other muscular problems. They can’t contract without adequate calcium. Symptoms can include weakness, muscle cramps or spasms, PMS symptoms, tension etc.

3.    To provide strength for your skeletal system. Most people know that calcium is necessary to build strong bones and teeth. However, your bones actually serve as a good vault, like in the bank where you keep your reserves – a storage depot. When you have sufficient calcium, your body can draw on these reserves when needed.  Any time your body needs calcium your parathyroid glands make a withdrawal to compensate for shortages or deposit excesses back into the vault. Pretty neat, huh?

It’s not only for the prevention of osteoporosis or kidney stones but is vital for life and the prevention of tension, anxiety or stress.

Calcium, the most abundant mineral in your body, is required for muscle contraction, blood vessel expansion and contraction, secretion of hormones and enzymes, and transmitting impulses throughout your nervous system. Your body strives to maintain constant concentrations of calcium in blood, muscle, and intercellular fluids.

It also happens to be the most powerful painkiller there is - far superior to morphine!

Colds, ‘Flu and Polio

Hard water containing calcium bicarbonate (the kind that leaves a calcium deposit in your teakettle) is the best for drinking. Do not confuse this with calcium carbonate. Calcium bicarbonate is completely assimilated and builds your bones by combining with the organic phosphorus (an important mineral) found in grains (we don't encourage the dead refined stuff sold nowadays) and lecithin (an emulsifier) in natural fats.

It is this calcium bicarbonate that is essential in the blood stream to prevent children from becoming susceptible to polio, colds and diseases of childhood which produce fevers.

In fact, calcium bicarbonate deficiency alone can cause a child to have recurrent fever, a fever which disappears at once on the administration of calcium lactate or calcium gluconate (which form calcium bicarbonate after absorption). Calcium deficiency fevers are common in children during the ages of rapid bone growth, especially where the child is getting too much of the cereal foods such as processed dry cereals, without enough hard water calcium. The phosphorus is out of proportion to the calcium bicarbonate intake. Phosphorus needs to be kept in balance with calcium.

Some Calcium Deficiency Symptoms

Symptoms of hypocalcemia (hypo=low + calcemia=calcium) include numbness and tingling in the fingers, depression, stress, insomnia, tension, hyperactivity, inability to “switch off”, muscle cramps, convulsions, lethargy, poor appetite, and abnormal heart rhythms, etc, etc.

And What Of Magnesium?

Whilst calcium contracts your muscles, magnesium relaxes them.

Take the heartbeat example above. The calcium contracts your heart and magnesium relaxes it. That’s how muscles work. If you’re deficient in calcium, your muscles can’t contract. If you’re deficient in magnesium, they can’t relax. Either way is not good.

A severe magnesium deficiency can result in low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia) as well as low levels of potassium (hypokalemia).

Calcium and Magnesium Ratios

Calcium cannot be utilized without its balancing partner, magnesium. They work in tandem. In order for your body to be able to utilize calcium, it needs to be in a 2:1 ratio with magnesium with the correct pH so that they can be absorbed.

Can You Believe That The FAA Has Approved Psych Drugs For Our Pilots?

The human body is an extremely complex biochemical machine, with chemical reactions and flows that occur in harmony and rhythmically one with another. They happen in specific sequences, in certain quantities, and at exact rates of speed. When a foreign substance such as a psychotropic drug is introduced into your body these flows and inner workings are disrupted. The drugs may speed up, slow down, dam up, overwhelm or deny critical metabolic substances.

This is why psychiatric drugs produce side effects. This is, in fact, why they produce any effect at all. They do not heal anything. The human body, however, is unmatched in its ability to withstand and respond to such disruptions. The various systems fight back, trying to process the foreign chemical, and work diligently to counterbalance its effects on the body.

But your body can only take so much. Quickly or slowly, the systems break down. Like a car run on rocket fuel, you may be able to get it to run a thousand miles per hour, but the tires, the engine and the internal parts were never meant for this; the machines flies apart.

Stimulants for ADHD should not be used in children under six years of age. Adverse reactions include: nervousness and insomnia, hypersensitivity , anorexia, nausea, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, blood pressure and pulse changes, tachycardia, angina, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and toxic psychosis. Some children have developed the involuntary tics and twitching called Tourette's disorder.

Major tranquilizers also known as anti-psychotics, frequently cause difficulty in thinking, poor concentration, nightmares, emotional dullness, depression, despair and sexual dysfunction. Physically, they can cause Tardive Dyskinesia - sudden, uncotrollable, painful muscle cramps and spasms, writhing, squirming, twisting and grimacing movements, especially on the legs, face, mouth and tongue, drawing the face into a hideous scowl. They also induce Akathisia, a severe restlnessness that studies show can cause agitation and psychosis. A potentially fatal effect is Neuropleptic Malignant Syndrome, which includes muscle rigidity, altered mental states, irregular pulse or blood pressure and cardiac problems.

Minor tranquilizers or benzodiazepines can cause lethargy, lightheadedness, confusion, nervousness, sexual problems, hallucinations, nightmares, severe depression, extreme restlessness, insomnia, nausea and muscle tremors. Epileptic seizures and death have resulted from suddenly stopping the use of minor tranquilizers. Thus, it is important never to stop suddenly or without proper medical supervision, even if the drugs have only been taken for a couple of weeks.

Sedative Hypnotics frequently cause the above side effects as well as a hangover effect, apparent drunken state, lack of coordination (ataxia) and skin rash.

Antidepressants (tricyclics) can cause sedation, drowsiness, lethargy, difficulty thinking, confusion, poor concentration, memory problems, nightmares, panic feelings,and extreme restelssness; also delusions, manic reactions, delirium, seizures, fever, lowered white blood cell count (with risks of infection), liver damage, heart attacks and strokes.

Selective Serotonin  Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause headaches, nausea, anxiety and agitation, insomnia and bizarre dreams, loss of appetite, impotence, confusion and akathisia. It is estimated that between 10% and 25% of SSRI users experience akathisia, often in conjunction with suicidal thoughts, hostility and violent behavior.

Conclusion

If you are worried about something - a problem in life such as relationships with your friends, parents or teachers, or how your child's school grades are going - taking any drug, illegal or psychiatric, isn't going to solve the problem. If a drug is used to feel better when you are depressed, sad or anxious, the relief is only for a short while. If the problem is not fixed or helped you will often feel worse than before. As a drug wears off, whatever pain, discomfort or upset that was there before taking the drug can become stronger. It can make you want to keep taking the drug.

Nutrition’s Role in Your Mental and Physical Health

If your body is deprived of proper nourishment or adequate rest, you can and will have problems mentally and/or physically.

There is no question of that.

What happens is that too little sleep, hunger, low blood sugar, poor dietary habits – too much sugar and refined carbs, not enough raw or undercooked vegetables (organic ones), inadequate protein intake, alcohol, drugs, meds  – will cause these hidden sources of anguish in your reactive mind to activate far more readily, get “sucked” in and activated without you realizing what is happening and you can start to feel quite awful.

Conduct your own tests on this.

A simple one is to watch a child consuming sugar and turning into an uncontrollable brat.

Another one is to go without food for a few hours and see how you feel. Do you start feeling anxious, nervous, fearful, worry about things, get agitated or just plain lose it?

Watch a baby who is overdue on his feed. He sure can get angry and then, even if he’s fed, can still be disgruntled and out of sorts because his hidden sources of anguish in his reactive mind have already been activated.

The Solutions and My Recommendations

  • Eat as much salad, undercooked veggies and protein (organic is best) as possible.
  • Leave out refined carbohydrates like chips, cakes, pastas, etc.
  • Keep sugar to a minimum. There is sugar in everything here in the USA. Check the bread some time. Where I come from, we don’t have sugar in our bread  and our cakes and cookies are waaayyy less sweet. So, look out for the hidden sources of sugar. Sugar alone can cause untold mental reactions.
  • Avoid alcohol as much as possible and definitely avoid drugs and compensate for the side effects of your meds with increased nutrition and supplements. (Our bodies are not deficient in drugs or created with excess organs and glands. We have an over-medicated and over-“surgeried” society. The ongoing debates on health care reform is singularly lacking in good common sense nutrition and supplementation.)
  • Keep caffeine to a minimum. If you can give it up, good. If you can’t, try and reduce your intake.
  • Drink enough good quality water.
  • Make sure you supplement your food with the basics: a good multi vitamin and mineral, calmag, additional minerals. (This is a great regimen for boosting your immune system too!)

How To Reduce Stress!

Liver – Main Detoxification Organ of Your Body

You may not know this but your body (actually your liver) deposits toxins in the tissues of your body. The reason it does this is due to overload. It can’t cope with the abundance of toxins.

Your body has a large number of fat cells. This is a good thing. Your body cannot make hormones and even have adequate energy if you didn’t. You need fat – good fat.

Whether you’re skinny or fat or anywhere in between, you have fat cells. When your liver deposits these toxins because of being overloaded, it deposits them majorly in your fat cells. That's just the way our bodies are made. We have a clever body design architect.

Toxins and Their Sources

Toxins can be gotten from many sources. You breathe in fumes, you eat food that is loaded with chemicals, pesticides, etc, some people have meds (even though they might be needed, they are still drugs and drugs are toxins), viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungus, mold – and the list goes on and on.

As I said before, your liver gets overloaded and cannot filter out the toxins from your blood fast enough (you’re supposed to get rid of them through your urine and stools) so it starts depositing them in your cells and joints, muscles, ligaments. What Have Hormones, Stress, Sleep and Weight Got To Do With Each Other?

Hormones

As you know, the glands of your body produce hormones. In fact, they produce more than 600 different hormones. Hormones are the chemical messengers that your glands send out to give instructions to your cells – like produce energy, go to sleep, time to wake up, digest this food, produce milk to feed the baby etc.

If there’s a breakdown in this communication system, the messages either can’t get through or they’re too weak or too strong and so get scrambled (wires get crossed), so your body starts to malfunction.

Adrenals

These glands are situated in various parts of your body and they include the adrenals (the little triangular glands above the kidneys – “ad” means above and “renal” means kidney) .

Your adrenals have a responsible job and perform many functions. One of these functions is to release a hormone called cortisol when you have any inflammation. Cortisol is your body’s own anti-inflammatory. That’s right. Your adrenals run a little factory that produces cortisol. So, when you’re under stress, those adrenals are pumping out the cortisol. Sounds good.

Stress

Stress can be defined as any mental or physical condition that causes the destruction of a few or many cells. Even something as basic as missing a meal or having an upset with someone puts stress on your body and your adrenal glands are the ones that respond to the stress.

Those tiny little glands excrete cortisol to deal with the stress. If you have any stress, they will just pump out the cortisol to deal with it.

Inflammation

Now, let’s say you have inflammation in your body and your adrenals start pumping out the cortisol to deal with it, that’s fine.

But, how about when there’s constantly some kind of inflammation caused by undetected viruses, parasites, candida, bacteria, allergies to things in the environment, food sensitivities chemical pollutants, vitamins etc, etc?

Did you know that they cause inflammation in your body? They do. Even vitamins can do this. If you're doing a hit or miss thing with the vitamins in an attempt to resolve symptoms and you're using the wrong ones or excessive doses, they add more strain to your adrenals as they have to deal with them too. Anxiety, gasping for air

Since my husband passed away in February, I have a problem with anxiety attacks.  They come and go but when I get it, it stays for about a week where I cannot breath and therefore cannot sleep.
